Gallery: Droid vs. iPhone
I’ve posted a gallery of the Droid smartphone by Motorola and Verizon Wireless. The first several photos are views of the handset by itself and the last provides a comparison to the iPhone. The hardware design of Droid is solid if a little bulky. It’s larger and heavier than the iPhone (6 oz. vs. 4.8 oz.) but that’s a side-effect of the slide out keyboard. The keyboard requires some effort to slide up and isn’t spring-assisted like some other devices like the Sidekick. The keyboard itself is disappointing and mushy as I said in my review, but there’s always the virtual keyboard which arrived in Android 1.5 (Cupcake).
Check out all the pictures here.

Gallery: Dell Vostro A90 unboxing
It’s here!
Exactly one month ago I wrote about The $200 ‘Mac’ — a new all-black, business-oriented version of the eminently-hackable Dell Mini 9 netbook called the Vostro A90. After writing about the new hackintoshable netbook I placed an order for one of the little black beauties and it arrived this week. Yes, it takes a solid month to get a netbook from Dell (a stock configuration, mind you). What’s up with that?
I posted a gallery of 13 pictures of the new Vostro A90, including some comparison shots between it and the Dell Mini 9 and some internal shots of the SSD and RAM slots as part of the migration process. Captions at 11…
Note: It looks like Dell has raised the price of the Vostro A90 significantly, with prices now starting at $294 (after a $30 instant rebate). I hope that you grabbed one when they were $200! Lower prices can be found or returned/refurbed netbooks at the Dell Outlet.

Gallery: Installing Mac OS X on a Dell Mini 9
I posted a photo gallery of pictures that I took while installing Mac OS X on my Dell Mini 9 netbook last night. I apologize for the craptastic resolution of the iPhone photos, it was the easiest way to liveTweet the process. More soon…

Gallery: Remote Install Mac OS X
Apple just released a Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update (kbase article: HT3174) for all users via Software Update. The download includes Remote Install Mac OS X v.1.1 which:
provides enhanced customization capabilities and improved performance for migration over FireWire, Ethernet and wireless networks.
The update was specifically released to address the MacBook (Late 2008) - which lost Firewire and the MacBook Pro (Late 2008).
This update includes the previously released DVD or CD Sharing Setup Update 1.0 software to allow the computer it is installed on to act as an optical drive “host” for MacBook Air computers.
The update installs:
- Migration Assistant 1.2.3
- Mac OS X Remote Install 1.1 (located in /Applications/Utilities)
- DVD or CD Sharing (located in the Sharing System preferences panel)
I posted a gallery of running the Remote Install Mac OS X application.

Gallery: iPod nano 4G unboxing
I received my iPod nano 4G today and posted a quick gallery of the unboxing. So far, it’s pretty damned sweet although I was slightly disappointed to learn that the screen is exactly the same as the 3G nano, just in a portrait as opposed to landscape orientation.

Gallery: iPhone 3G launch at the Apple Store in Atlantic City

Atlantic City — I arrived at the Apple Store at The Pier here today with Rob Parker at about 7:30am and we were given wrist band numbers 49 and 50 and took our places in line. I talked with the first 10 people in line and Matthew Diullio and Leah Copsey (pictured) both of Ocean City, NJ were with first people in line. They arrived at about 8pm last night and were the only people in line until about 3am today when a few others showed up. According to Diullio, the bulk of the people behind him didn’t arrive until after 6am.
Mike and Jessica Morowitz from Chicago had the youngest iPhone-waiter in our line, their 7 months old daughter Anna arrived a little after 7am. Everyone was well fed and chipper and it wasn’t too hot or sunny yet on the Atlantic City boardwalk.
We lined up along the boards until just before 8am when the line was moved to the right hand side of the mall where 10 people at a time were allowed to enter the Apple Store beginning promptly at 8am. The A.C. store was well staffed with over 20 associates clearly visible. Activation stations (ahem!) were scattered throughout the store and people we being personally escorted to a station to make their iPhone selections and pay via the store’s wireless POS systems.
Just as I was given my clearance to enter the store, Apple staffers started distributing bottles of water to the anxious people waiting in line. As I’ve already posted, I wasn’t able to get activated in store but eventually got activated at the coffee bar on the third floor of the mall about an hour later. I still haven’t been able to sync my contacts and data as of this writing though.

Gallery: iPhone launch at Vodaphone in Portugal
Five pictures from the iPhone 3G launch at Vodaphone in Portugal courtesy of Neal Hoskins. Who writes:
Last minute change to Vodaplan gives you – get this – 500MB in their $70 per month plan, 250MB more costs another $15 per month. Hardly a real data phone, you can forget YouTube on 3G. How many Web pages can you download for 250MB?

Gallery: Sydney Apple Store facade
Reader Brad Wilson sends some pictures of the unique teaser facade covering the upcoming Apple Store in Sydney Australia. A trend that started in Boston:
The Sydney (AUS) Apple store now has a blue covering with an “ocean wave” of light blue iPod Nanos and “Drop in soon. Apple Store, Sydney” written across the building.
I tried to get closer to see inside (they had the curtain drawn letting construction crew in), but was quickly whisked away. It looks like it still has a ways to go on the inside. (plaster and cables everywhere) Maybe by June 9th (hopefully iPhone 3G day).
According to ifoAppleStore (via The Age):
Apple has leased the first three levels of the building at 77 King Street and, according to the development application, each of the levels will have a floor space of about 445 square metres.Over the store’s entrance - and behind the “drop in soon’ sign - will be a three-metre-high Apple logo.
Two other smaller Apple Stores - one in Sydney’s North Shore suburb of Chatswood and the other in Melbourne’s Chadstone shopping centre - are also under development and will probably open after the main Sydney store throws open its doors.
That is expected to happen at 6pm on Thursday, June 19.
