Macworld Expo Las Vegas 2009!

Macworld Expo Las Vegas 2009Every year I have to decide between attending Macworld Expo in San Francisco and the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. It’s becoming increasingly diffcult to justify a two week junket away that doesn’t involve family and Mickey Mouse or a destination somewhere in Europe. Macworld always wins.

Attending both MWSF and CES in 2007 was a problem for a different reason–the braintrusts in management scheduled them on overlapping days making it virtually impossible to attend both shows unless you cut one short or own a private plane.

That being said, I think that IDG should move Macworld Expo to Las Vegas next year.

Sure, Cupertino is going to cry about travel expenses (I can hear it now “Waaaaaaaaa, waaaaaaa, we have to send 10,000 people to Vegas, Waaaaaaaa!”) but think about the upside: you’ve got a bazillion frothing geeks in town (many on expense accounts) to see CES already. Macworld Expo should be able to draw a good amount of them over just out of pure curiosity. And think about the media coverage. It seems like CNBC, MSNBC and many of the other cable news networks have been covering CES around the clock.

Pessimists will say that CES is too big of a show to compete with. If that’s the case then stagger the start dates by a day. Any show veteran will tell you that first day of any show is the best day. After the first day, things slow down “expo”nentially (ask any exhibitor). Think about it: you could see the Bill Gates keynote on Monday, then the Steve Jobs keynote on Tuesday.

I think that moving Macworld Expo to Vegas would help increase Apple’s market share and build more brand awareness among the tech titans that are already in town for CES. Maybe the new dual shows could fill the void left by Comdex?

Viva Las Vegas!

Who cares
Apple has to have their show far from other products to avoid direct comparisons. Bring it to CES and people will realize there are better phones, better MP3 players, better TV devices and better computers.

Up in SF the great Jobs can operate his reality distortion field to full effect.... (Read the rest)
