Heinz Kluetmeier interview
I had the opportunity to interview legendary sports photojournalist Heinz Kluetmeier after today’s Apple press conference about his experiences with Apple’s new all-in-one post production application for photographers - Aperture.
Heinz is one of the three photogs featured in the Apple promotional video for Aperture and is the Senior Staff Photographer, Special Projects for Sports Illustrated magazine with over 100 SI cover shots to his credit.
Jason: Tell me about your experience with Aperture.
Heinz: Aperture is fabulous. Two years ago I was 90 percent film, now I’m zero film. Although I know both sides of the table, I’m a photographer more than an editor. Now I’ll elbow people out of the way to edit.
Jason: What did you use before Aperture?
Heinz: With previous tools (PhotoMechanic and Photoshop) I spent more time watching that clock. I’d have to go make a cup of coffee, then come back.
Jason: Does Aperture accurately replicate the analog experience of photography?
Heinz: Aperture goes well beyond replicating it, so far beyond it. It really put the joy back in it for me.
Jason: What other features of Aperture impressed you?
Heinz: I really like the auto white balance and compare and select aspects. I want to minimize the amount of time I spend waiting.
Jason: Have you always been a Mac guy?
Heinz: Personally, I’m a Mac guy. I use a PowerBook G4 and PowerMac G5 desktop and love the Apple Cinema displays. I usually get my daughter’s hand-me-down Macs.
