Apple sells 1M iPhones; 10M apps downloaded

Apple is touting the fact that they sold over 1 million iPhones and had 10 million downloads from the App Store on the iPhone 3Gs opening weekend. In the press release, Steve Job points out that βIt took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.β
It’s funny how the activation and sync problems and 3G coverage discrepancies from Friday have now drifted off the front page and are already a distant memory. If you’ve ever wondered why Apple chooses to launch major/risky hardware on Friday’s it’s because the stock market closes for two days giving Apple all weekend to mend whatever problems occur β like they did this weekend. And the stock market is rewarding AAPL for it today.
The original iPhone launch happened at 6pm local time, well after the major stock exchanges closed. It’s a wonder why they rolled the dice this time around opening at 8am? Cramming more sales into their “opening weekend” perhaps? Hmm…
