Stuffit Deluxe turns 20No self-respecting Mac user can forget Stuffit and Stuffit Deluxe, the venerable compression/decompression utility that turns 20 this year. I still hear a friend sarcastiscly saying “with Expander Enhancer!” in my head whenever I see or hear the word Stuffit. Ah, good times.

The popular Stuffit Expander was practially a requirement and was part of almost every Mac users tool box. The free software allowed users to decompress most file types including binhex (.hqx) and zip. The paid version  called Stuffit Deluxe boasts over 10 million users today and allows users to compress just about any file into a .sit file or a self-extracting archive (.sea).

Smith Micro Software, Inc. is marking the occasion with StuffIt Deluxe 2009 for the Mac ($80, upgrades are $30) that includes suport for QuickLook, Time Machine, MobileMe, Spotlight and Googles MacFUSE, which allows users to mount any browsable archive type in the Finder just like a disk or disk image.

Deluxe 09 also includes Archive Manager, DropStuff 2009 and SEA Maker which lets users make OS X mini-installers using the StuffIt technology. There’s also a new Remote Payload feature allows the SEA Maker to retrieve the parts for installation from an FTP site or a users MobileMe iDisk, integrated CD/DVD burning capabilities and strong RC4 512-bit or AES 256-bit encryption.

What’s your favorite Stuffit story?
