Google is close to releasing a new iPhone application that will allow you to speak search terms into the iPhone and get search results. The application will be convenient for use while driving or for any time you don’t feel like pecking out your query on the iPhone’s keyboard.

According to the The New York Times the search results may also include local information by leveraging the iPhone’s location-based hardware. No word on ads, but you can rest assured that Google will have those as well.

Curiously the voice search software will only initially be available on the iPhone, but it probably won’t be long before Google rolls it out on handsets that run its Android operating system like the T-Mobile G1.

The Times mentions that the free application could be available as soon as Friday through the App Store, but it wasn’t available as of press time.
