Rumor: iPhone 3.0 to get radio tagging, Nike+ support
Aside: Since Apple already uses the term “3G” for it’s second-generation iPhone, what will they call the third-generation model on Monday? I’m going with “iPhone 3.0″ (like the software) but I bet that marketing had some fits with that one.
AppleInsider went on a fishing trip through the strings of the newly minted iTunes 8.2 and found a couple of interesting nuggets of information. The strings that hint at a couple of new features, including radio tagging and support for the Nike+ Sport Kit.
Radio tagging could allow users to tag songs for purchase later from the iTunes store.
The strings in iTunes 8.2 (pictured) show references to a determining station names and frequency, seeming to indicate some digital radio capability. Whether this is simple FM radio with RDS capability or actual digital radio is unclear.
The other new discovery in the iPhone 3.0 hardware is that it may contain a Nike+ receiver on board. Like the 2nd-generation iPod Touch this would allow iPhone users to forgo the separate wireless hardware required to use the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit with an iPhone. AI notes that the new Nike+ software will need to run in the background in order to collect data while the user is on the phone.
Other potential features found in the iTunes 8.2 strings include the ability to store voice memos, an iPhone disk mode, direct movie downloads and VoiceOver in Nike+.
