Safari needs Google Docs support
I have to agree with many of you that chimed in on my article on why iPhone should remain closed that Apple needs to support Google Docs in Safari - specifically the Safari mobile variant that will ship with iPhone. The logic is that Google Docs support on iPhone obviates the need for a copy of Office, iWork or Docs To Go. For the uninitiated, Google Docs reads and writes Microsoft Word and Excel files.
I've been a huge fan of Google Docs since it launched and find it to be an indispensable part of my toolkit - in fact, it's replaced Microsoft Office in many instances. The problem is that gDocs still doesn't work with Safari. It's not a huge deal because you can use it with several other Mac browsers including Camino, Firefox, Mozilla and my favorite, Flock (a FireFox derivative). It's just ironic that Google's CEO sits on the Apple board yet the companies have almost zero integration.
For the iPhone to be viable Apple needs to provide tools to read and modify Word and Excel documents and until a mobile version of iWork is ready, Google Docs seems like a natural fit.
