3G iPod touch in two to three months?
Earlier this month several manufacturers began shipping cases for the iPod touch with camera holes on the rear purportedly to accommodate the addition of a camera and/or microphone, like its bigger brother the iPhone. Its almost certain that the case fabs aren’t in possession of any real details about the upcoming iPod touch (or nano) revisions but are instead making cases based on rumors about the new hardware.
A “well-connected” source tells Wired that the rumors are indeed accurate and that Apple has begun manufacturing a new iPod touch with integrated camera and microphone. Further, its source tells Wired that the third-generation iPod touch will go on sale “in two to three months.” The new time estimate sounds perfectly reasonable as a September launch would coincide with new iPod announcements for the past several years.
Interest in the 3G iPod touch is intense as the addition of a camera and mic would metamorphosize the touch from a mostly music/gaming device into more-powerful VOIP communication platform — provided that Wi-Fi is accessible. There’s every reason to believe that the new touch’s camera would support video capture, edit and upload just like the iPhone 3GS. And the mic could easily support voice control, just like the iPhone 3GS.
And let’s not forget that the iPod touch 2G leapfrogged the iPhone 3G in two other areas as well: a) performance, and b) RAM. It’s conceivable that the new touch 3G could ship with a faster processor and a more storage (64GB anyone?) than the currently shipping iPhone 3GS — if history repeats itself.
Maybe they’ll call it the iPod touch 3GS?
