Apple leaves Chamber of Commerce in green dispute
The Washington Post reports that Apple Monday pulled out of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce because of its criticism of plans to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions in the U.S.
Apple Vice President Catherine Novelli notified the Chamber of the company’s displeasure in a letter, writing “Apple supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the Chamber at odds with us in this effort.” As a result, Novelli said, “we have decided to resign our membership effective immediately.”
As it turns out, the U.S. Chamber has been a vocal critic of legislation aimed at reducing U.S. emissions. President Thomas J. Donohue opposes the “cap and trade” system passed by the House of Representatives because it doesn’t require other polluting countries to act, among other reasons.
Apple joins Pacific Gas and Electric, PNM Resources, and Exelon as the fourth company in recent weeks to abandon the Chamber over its climate policy.
