Verizon Droid ad attacks iPhone on features

Verizon Wireless has released a television commercial for its new Droid handset – which runs Google’s Android OS natch – and it’s a shot directly across the bow of the S.S. iPhone.

The ad (and corresponding Web site DroidDoes.com) are part of a new advertising campaign which position the Droid as a direct competitor to Apple’s venerable iPhone.

Earlier in the month Verizon’s There’s A Map For That ad took aim at AT&T’s lack of 3G coverage, whereas the new ad targets some of the iPhone’s biggest omissions.

The scrolling ad copy even co-opts Apple’s iEverything naming convention right down to the lower case “i” …

  • iDon’t have a real keyboard
  • iDon’t run simultaneous apps
  • iDon’t take 5-megapixel pictures
  • iDon’t customize
  • iDon’t run widgets
  • iDon’t allow open development
  • iDon’t take pictures in the dark
  • iDon’t have interchangeable batteries
  • iDon’t everything

The version of the ad on the VZW Web site adds one additional “iDon’t:”

  • iDon’t take night shots

The Droid handset was developed by Motorola and it’s rumored to sport an OMAP3430 processor, 5-megapixel camera, slideout QWERTY keyboard, touch screen, and Android OS 2.0.

Verizon’s tagline is “All the things your phone doesn’t do, Droid Does.”

Droid has the potential to be the first legitimate challenger. What’s your take on the latest iPhone killer?

Update: BGR has posted a first hands-on with the Droid noting that it’s “just slightly thicker than an iPhone 3GS and the thinnest QWERTY-slider we’ve ever seen.”
