iPhone Diary Day 11: Cases and holsters
As sure as the iPhone was going to ship, you could expect a flood of accessories to follow. If the iPod is any indication, the iPhone accessory market is surely going to be a big business in the weeks and months to come.
When it comes to cases most people fall squarely into one of two camps: you’re either pro case or anti-case. The pro case camp, where your author is firmly planted, believes that cases are a good because they protect our mobile gadgetry from the trauma of daily life. The anti-case faction throws caution to the wind and believes that cases take away from the natural beauty of the product and since gadgets are getting so small, a case is a hindrance.
When I picked up my iPhone I couldn’t dream of putting it into a case, but after its full week of use the need for a case - or more specifically, a holster - became obvious. I don’t like to carry my iPhone in my pocket, it’s impossible to access when driving, easy to forget about and I worry about scratching the screen. Like my Treo before it I prefer to carry my iPhone on my belt, especially during the work week.
Enter the Holster Pro (US$30) from Speck Products.
The Holster Pro solves the problem of where to keep my iPhone with its included belt clip, which attaches firmly to any belt. One issue is that it can only be attached to a belt in a vertical (or portrait) orientation. It would be better if there was an option to clip it in a horizontal (landscape) orientation which would fit better along the belt line. The leather holster grips iPhone securely and has a smooth velvet-like material on the inside of to protect against scratches.
I prefer to keep my iPhone holstered screen out so that I can easily glance at it to see who’s calling, but this exposes the screen to potential scrapes, bangs and other accidental contact. Luckily you can also holster the iPhone screen in for additional protection. As an added bonus the clip area can convert into a kickstand so that you can watch movies, videos and TV shows at a comfortable viewing angle.
