iPhoneUnlocking.com a scam?

One Friday there was a lot of hoopla over the potential iPhone software-only unlock by UniquePhones. The solution was supposed to be offered for sale on Saturday at noon EDT on the group’s Web site iPhoneUnlocking.com.

Saturday came and went with no software unlock patch being offered and only a brief press release posted on the site’s blog.

The sale of unlocking codes is on hold after the company received a telephone call from a Menlo Park, California, law firm at approximately 2:54 a.m. this morning (GMT).

After saying they were phoning on behalf of AT&T, the law firm presented issues such as copyright infringement and illegal software dissemination…

Until an assessment is made of the potential of legal action, Uniquephones is unable to release the unlocking software for sale.

All this leads me to believe that the Web site was a scam. Did they ever really have a software unlocking solution? Or was the site merely a trap to capture people’s email address an IMEI?

Gizmodo said it best:

there is only one true way to really blow up the Death Star: Support the iPhone Dev Team to get the FREE software unlock and keep advancing native software development for the iPhone.
