10.5 speculation runs wild; Photoshopper field day
Last Thursday a mysterious blogger named Trinity Rubicon posted some terrific screen shots he alleged were from Apple’s unreleased Mac OS 10.5 (a.k.a. "Leopard"). The two shots, posted on a blogger account with no other posts, sent the Mac world into a fit of speculation and debate.
The shots in question showed all kinds of rumored features possible for the new OS, including:
- Tabbed Finder windows with Favorites (ala Safari)
- New "/" menu
- Boot Camp menu
- Virtual desktops
- Unified UI, no more brushed metal
- iCal and Address Book merged
- CoreWindows: Windows APIs built in
- Windows app (IE7) running natively
- Windows version listed in "About this Mac…"
An interesting debate raged in the 120+ comments under the story and another 300 comments at MacRumors: Are they real or are they Photoshop? The author then admitted on Saturday that the images are "100% fake." As a result of the great ruse (I wanted to believe!) the author has posted a list of features that he wants to see in 10.5.
That hasn’t stopped more screen shots from cropping up on the Web though. Another round of 10.5 ’shots was posted to Flickr (gee, another Free anonymous site) showing a new version of Safari with page thumbnails, an accelerated bookmark menu and a black address book icon.
Either way, the shots are a testament to the intense amount of interest in Apple’s upcoming OS release. I hope that Apple takes a page out of Microsoft’s book and makes a beta version of 10.5 available to users early.
