Sun adds Apple native support to StarOffice 9

Sun on Monday announced that StarOffice 9 was available with native Mac OS X support.

The company’s latest StarOffice (statement) gets a revamp throughout and makes it easier to edit PDF files, blog and publish wikis. It also supports Open Document Format, Microsoft Office–legacy and OOXML files–and PDFs.

StarOffice is also open source, but what’s notable to me is the native Apple support. Why? My hunch is that StarOffice could find some SMB momentum on the Mac platform. Microsoft Office is costly, Apple’s counterparts aren’t an exact substitute and that void may leave an opening for StarOffice.

Just a hunch. StarOffice will run you $34.95 a download or $25 per user for enterprise accounts.
