SuccessFactors, which offers on-demand human capital management software, said Wednesday that it has landed a deployment of 300,000 users bringing its user base to 4.5 million. In addition, it has named former eBay exec Tom Fisher as vice president of cloud computing.

The 300,000 user deployment was at a customer only described as “one of the world’s largest retailers.” But the list of retailers in the U.S. fitting that bill is fairly small. Among the potential customers: Wal-Mart has 2.1 million employees; Target has 351,000 employees and Home Depot has 322,000 employees. Sears Holdings almost makes the 300,000 employee cut if you include Canadian workers. Other retailers—JC Penney, Kohl’s and Lowe’s didn’t have enough employees for a 300,000 user deployment. Kohl’s and Lowe’s are both customers of SuccessFactors already.

For SuccessFactors (all resources) its big deployment is quite a jump from its previous installations. It has eight customers with more than 50,000 users, but nothing approaching its latest effort. SuccessFactors argues that it is one of the few software as a service companies where its application is used across most business units.

Fisher’s role will be to lead SuccessFactors’ cloud and developer programs. He was the acting CTO of eBay. Fisher also had stints at Qualcomm and Gateway.
