Autonomic installation
Autonomic computing proposes that an IT environment can operate with the responsiveness and independence of the human nervous system. It sounds a bit like science fiction, but it is one of the most important areas of technology research and development. An IBM-led group of companies is using autonomic computing concepts to deal with the software installation and configuration process, which account for a good portion of application crashes. The group has devised an XML-based document format, dubbed Solution Installation for Autonomic Computing, that captures the dependencies and pre-requisites for installing software. The spec has been accepted by the W3C.
