Oracle buys Virtual Iron; Bolsters virtualization technology
Oracle said Wednesday that it has acquired Virtual Iron Software, which makes virtualization management software, for an undisclosed sum.
The company said in a statement (Techmeme) that it will combine Virtual Iron’s technology and Oracle virtual machines to “provide more comprehensive and dynamic resource management across the full software stack.”
According to Oracle, the deal is expected to close in the summer. Virtual Iron has traditionally focused on small to mid-sized business. It’s unclear if Oracle is buying Virtual Iron to move downstream a bit or move the technology upstream.
In any case, Virtual Iron was among a bevy of companies trying to nip at the heels of VMware. With Oracle, Virtual Iron may get a stronger bite.
