IBM today announced the release of a new verison of its Tivoli Identity Manager, which includes upgrades that allows the company to “administer, secure, monitor and certify user identities and their access to applications, information and systems.”

Basically, this is about access and being able to manage that access - as well as compliance with industry and government regulations - across the entire company via security software. In a press release, the company said:

Critical business information no longer resides solely in the data center. Organizations must be able to control who has access to what information across entire IT and data center environments including systems, devices, data and applications, while also reporting compliance with industry and government regulations. Until today, the identity and access management governance market has been disjointed, with products only addressing individual problems.

This becomes especially important in areas where data is critical but also sensitive and subject to heavy regulation, such as banking and health care.
