Google takes Street View off-road; Cast your vote for places to shoot

With Google’s Street View imagery, it’s easy to fire up the browser and brave a drive through New York’s Times Square or cruise down Hollywood’s Sunset Strip.  But what about that walking trail that you’ve been thinking about exploring or even the campus of Stanford University that you’ll be visiting this Spring?

Google is going off-road to bring you those images by mounting those famous Street View cameras to a trike. But where exactly off-road should those cameras be headed? That’s where you come in.

Between now and Oct. 26, the company is accepting suggestions on where to take the trike next - but you have to keep your ideas within six categories: parks & trails, university campuses, pedestrian malls such as outdoor shopping areas and boardwalks, theme parks & zoos, landmarks and sports venues such a golf courses, racing tracks or  stadium grounds.

Taking the Street View camera off-road is a cool idea - but I can’t wait to see where Google will take the camera next. I vote for a tour inside the Empire State building, including the observation deck. When can we explore the corridors of the White House or Capitol building? Can I take a look inside the homes of the rich and famous?

Cast your vote here.
