According to a comment on my last post, eWeek has posted a story saying that Sun will open source Java using version 2 of the GNU General Public License (the GPL). However, clicking on the link leads you to eWeek's home page which means one of two things: either the long URL was fabricated by the person who left the comment, or eWeek has unpublished the story (removed it from its Web site).  It didn't take long for me to determine that it appears to be the latter of the two. By entering "Java" into eWeek's search box and sorting the results based on date (this is the resulting search string/URL), the first story listed is by Steven Vaughan-Nichols and it's about Sun "GPLing" Java on November 13th (tomorrow). Unfortunately, it too simply goes to eWeek's home page. So, the story appears to have been taken down. Here's a partial screen shot:

Java faces increased competition on both Windows and Linux thanks to the Microsoft .Net / Novell Mono pact.

This will remove remaining aprehension for Linux distributors. Smart move on Sun's part. Not so good for MS/Novell.... (Read the rest)
