Intel rolls out low power server chips
Intel on Monday said that it is now shipping four new low-power Xeon server chips.
The chip giant noted that the lineup is the first halogen-free Xeons, which will lower its environmental impact. However, you’ll most likely be interested in the power consumption.
Intel said in a statement its 5400 Series of chips–X5492, X5470 and L5430–has a low voltage version that uses 12.5 watts per core for a total of 50 watts of power. The top speed for this series is 3.4 GHz. The dual core X5370 consumes 80 watts of power with frequencies of 3.5 GHz. The X5492, however, is powerful but consumes 150 watts.
Most server vendors–Dell, HP, IBM, NEC, Rackable, Sun and others–are supporting Intel’s new Xeon chips, which run between $562 to $1,493.
