Images: Microsoft's shoddy Windows Genuine Advantage Installation Process
Clicking on the ID of the update that was waiting for me confirmed my suspicions about what the update was. It revealed this summary text: “The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool notifies you if your copy of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be non-genuine, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows.” So, it appears as though the Validation Toolkit that was installed earlier, without my consent, provides the infrastructure that enables such notifications and the associated functionality. My guess is that by refusing this, I wouldn’t be uninstalling the WGA Validation Toolkit, but rather just one of the components Microsoft has sent my way that works on top of it. Even so, at least this is something I can consent to. But to be sure this is something I want to consent to, the summary offers a “Details” link. So, I click on it in hopes of getting some more information.
