Gosling: Close but no cigar on open source Java
Rumors abounded earlier this month about the possibility of Sun releasing Java under an OSI-approved license at next week’s JavaOne conference. However in an Infoworld interview, James Gosling nixes that idea, saying (my emphasis):
Source code for Java already is available and has been for 10 years. The current model for Java is close to an open source model.
How Sun about joining Eclipse? Not in the cards either:
It would be a big step down. NetBeans was an open source project a long time before Eclipse ever came out.
Note he’s conflating Sun with NetBeans here, and his time line is a little questionable, but what the hey. In any case, one wonders whether Gosling is the ultimate authority here. As I recall, Sun recently got itself a new CEO and I don’t think his name was Gosling. I’ll have to go look that up.
