Om was right.  He got wind of some exciting news that Google was in serious talks to purchase Writely.  An entry into the official Google Blog confirms his findings.  Google has purchased Writely.

Writely is a collaborative writing tool that lets users create, save and share documents online.

- Share documents instantly & collaborate real-time.  Pick exactly who can access your documents.
- Edit your documents from anywhere.  Nothing to download — your browser is all you need.
- Store your documents securely online.  Offiste storage plus data backup every 10 seconds.
- Easy to use.  Clean, uncluttered screens with familiar, desktop fee.

On the Writely website you are able to signup to be notified when they begin accepting new registrations — they have temporarily suspended the creation of new accounts until they are moved over to Google.
