Samsung to release Android phone in June

Official news coming from Samsung says that they are releasing a new phone (the I7500) that runs Android this June. So far, the only company with handsets that run Android is HTC, but it sounds like that won’t be for long.

The quad band phone has some impressive specs too:

  • Android (cupcake)
  • 3.2” HVGA(320×480) AMOLED
  • 5 MP Camera
  • GPS
  • MPEG4, H.263, H.264, WMV
  • MP3, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA, RA
  • Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, WiFi, MicroUSB, 3.5mm ear jack
  • 8GB internal memory

As more and more smart phones running Android begin making their way onto the scene, I wonder if the device (and manufacurer of those devices) becomes less and less important to the consumer. Granted, this is how Windows Mobile works already.

For the most part, consumers are now paying for screen size, megapixels, internal memory and processor speed. On Android devices, the manufacturer brand itself isn’t as important as it once was now that the operating system is unified.

In the past, when purchasing a cell phone, I would avoid certain brands just because I didn’t like how their operating system felt. Is this a real concern for the open handset alliance members? Let’s hear what you think in the TalkBack!
