Google Spreadsheet, will it be used?

Google Spreadsheet will be launched tomorrow according to the WSJ.  Currently this page returns a 404 error message, but soon will be the login screen for the new service.  Most who are covering the story have optimistic expectations for the new service.  I have doubts though.

The reality is that the service will be simple — maybe too simple.  More than likely it will also be slow at first if it’s initially released to too many people.  According to a Google representative though, this product will be available on a test basis as an "alpha" product to a limited number of people (first come first serve).

I really question whether Google Spreadsheet will be a threat to Microsoft’s Excel.  First, how many individuals use spreadsheets for personal use?  I don’t, my wife doesn’t and neither do my parents.  In fact, I don’t think anybody I know does.

For those who do use spreadsheets on a daily basis, how many are already happy with the application they currently use?  I would venture to say most are and wont feel the pressing need to switch to a something new.

In the end, it comes down to how important sharing capabilities (the only real advantage I can see in reports ) turn out to be.  It will be interesting to see what kind of launch this product has — who knows? Maybe I will find something to use a spreadsheet for.
