Print advertising gets a name

googlepublicationads_1.jpgNewspapers and magazines are still in Google’s sights.  For a couple of months, they have been experimenting by purchasing pages in magazines on which to place ads.  Google recently  launched an invitation-only extension of AdWords called "Google Publication Ads" that specifically targets offline publications.

Along with this new service, Google registered some new domains that seem to confirm their interest.  googlemagazines.com/net/org/info and googlepapers.net/org/info were registered November 11th, 2005.  googlepapers.com is still registered to someone from Vancouver BC, Canada.  Before the official launch of this new service, it is likely Google will take ownership of googlepapers.com.

Will Google’s success with PPC be possible with print advertising?  Some say that Google may provide a trackable URL and phone number for print advertisers.

As an example, ads placed in newspapers could contain a URL like www.googlepapers.com/2324 which redirects to the web site of the advertiser.  Similarly, a phone number like 1-800-555-2324 could be redirected to the advertisers physical phone number.  With a system like this, all contact can be tracked and would act as a "click" in the online world.

According to the service web site, Google will send proof of publication along with an invoice to advertisers once their ad has run.  This sounds to me like they will not be providing PPC (Pay-Per-Contact) services initially.
