Vint Cerf warns about reliability and security on the web

It’s a bit ironic that Vint Cerf is touting Google’s infrastructure and warning users about unreliable software and poor security when both Blogger and Google Analytics were reported unavailable this week. To top it off, Google also recently pulled the plug on their paid video content services — causing users to “lose” their purchased video data.

“We worry about reliability and resilience at Google, to ensure that the loss of a data centre doesn’t affect everybody.” — Vint Cerf, Google

It would be interesting to know if Google is actually working to help the world’s digital information become permanent by indefinitely archiving it. I honestly believe Google is building a service a bit like the Internet Archive — only faster and more reliable. A service like this would allow users to find information regardless of its current online presence — this would add another dimension to Google’s search experience, and once again one-up the competition.
