FCC agrees to free white-space spectrum

America wins. Large broadcasting companies and makers of devices like wireless microphones are squirming today after the FCC announced that it has voted in favor of Google -- freeing the frequencies between television channels to create a wireless broadband service. What does that really mean? It means that unlicensed devices, as long as they follow a few rules, can operate in white-space frequencies. Larry Page explains how white-space can be used better than I ever could: "Wi-Fi on steroids".

We will soon have "Wi-Fi on steroids," since these spectrum signals have much longer range than today's Wi-Fi technology and broadband access can be spread using fewer base stations resulting in better coverage at lower cost.
