Managed services for mobile networks generated $19 bln in 2008
Managed services for mobile networks returned about $19 bln revenue in 2008, ($5.8 bln for network services and $13.4 bln for IT-related services.) Europe led managed services adoption: Tier One operators there face stiff competition, so they have turned to managed services to improve their margins. According to a new study from ABI Research, that $19 bln figure represents only a small part of the potential addressable market.

35 mln cellular modems shipped in 2008
Shipment data for the cellular modems used to connect laptops and netbooks to the Internet indicate that more than 35 mln of the devices hit the market in 2008. Of that total, the majority were the external USB modems that mobile operators have been pushing for some time. Continued growth has been bolstered as mobile operators have bundled USB modems with netbooks in attractively subsidized price plans. A further 3.5 mln were embedded modems, built into the computers, ABI Research found.

Global semiconductor market to generate $194.5 bln in 2009, 24.1% decline
Worldwide semiconductor revenue is forecast to reach $194.5 bln in 2009, a 24.1% decline from 2008 revenue. The industry is expected to return to positive growth in 2010, growing 7.5%, followed by additional growth through 2012. Even with three years of increased revenue, the semiconductor industry will fail to return to 2008 revenue totals. In 2012, the worldwide semiconductor revenue is projected to reach $253.4 bln, still below 2008 revenue of $256.4 bln, Gartner said.

Internet ads to reach $147 bln globally by 2012
The global advertising market grew to just over $600 bln in 2007, according to The Kelsey Group. The firm expects global ad revenues to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.7% and reach $707 bln in 2012. Interactive advertising revenues will increase significantly from $45 bln in 2007 to $147 bln globally in 2012, representing a 23.4% CAGR. Interactive advertising, which comprises search (including local search), display advertising, classifieds and other interactive ad products, grew its share of global advertising revenues from 6.1% in 2006 to 7.4% in 2007. By 2012 Kelsey Group analysts expect the interactive share of global ad spending will reach 21%.
During the forecast period (2007-2012), the United States will see interactive advertising revenues grow from $22.5 bln to $62.4 bln (22.6% CAGR), with interactive revenues in Canada increasing from $1.3 bln to $3.3 bln (21.3% CAGR).

LCD TV panel sales to grow 20.5% in 2009
The Information Network forecasts array processing equipment to decrease 41% in 2009 following an increase of 30% in 2008. Large-size TFT-LCD panel growth in 2009 will be buoyed by LCD TV and notebook sales. For 2009, 113.3 mln panels will be sold for LCD TVs, up 20.5% from 94.0 mln in 2008. Panels for notebooks will grow slightly faster, up 26.6% to 177.0 mln panels. Panels for monitors will decrease 17.0% in 2009 to 144.9 mln units.

Americans watched 151 hours of television per month in Q4 2008
Americans watched more television than ever in Q4 2008, Nielsen reported. The average American older than 2 years watched television for 151 hours per month. That was up from 146 hours in Q4 2007. More watching of recorded TV explained some of the increase: that was up to 7 hours from 5 hours the year before.

16.5% of mobile users spent over $100 in app stores
An ABI Research survey of US smartphone users who installed applications on their devices in 2008, conducted in November 2008, reveals that a surprising 16.5% spent between $100 and $499. That level of spending is especially significant given the low cost of most mobile applications, ranging from as little as a dollar or two at Apple’s iPhone App Store, to at most about $25.
