Search is the most popular Internet application in Italy

According to Nielsen//NetRatings, search is the most popular online application among online Italians, with 77% of Internet users in Italy resorting to search engines. Portals were second with 7%, followed by software manufacturers’ Web sites with 69%, non-search Internet tools at 47%, member communities at 44%, mass merchandiser sites at 34%, classifieds and auctions at 33%, full service commercial banks at 29% and broadcast media at 23%. In December 2005 13 mln Italian surfers, or 66% of active Internet users used new Internet applications, including telephone services (VoIP), video and music downloads, file sharing, blogging and instant messenger.
