Australian smart handheld market up 21.5% in Q2 2004

In Q2 2004 the Australian Smart Handheld Device (SHD) market posted strong growth of 21.5% from Q1 2004 in unit shipment terms. This significant growth was mainly attributed to the converged space which saw an expansion of 54.3% QTQ, with the bulk of growth seen in the data-centric category. The pen-based handheld space declined by 1.7% compared to Q1 2004, after experiencing minimal growth in the previous quarter. From an OS perspective, whilst Microsoft remained the leader, with 43.8% share of the total market, Palm ate into Microsoft’s share, growing by 66.9% sequentially. The third position went to Symbian, which grew by 29.6% from Q1 2004. Q2 2004 saw palmOne displace HP taking the number one position with 23.1% share of units shipped. HP finished in second position with 18.9% with Nokia following in third spot with 15.5% share. Rounding out the top 5 were O2 and Motorola with 13.1% and 8.1% share respectively.
