Shipments of rear-projection sets will rise to 5.6 mln units in 2004, up 11.4% from 5 mln in 2003, iSuppli predicts. Rear-projection TV (RPTV) set shipments will swell to 7.5 mln in 2008, rising at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8.3% from 2003. Rear-projection sets compete in the market for large-size TVs, i.e. sets larger than 40 inches. These large sets are the object of intense interest from consumers and manufacturers alike. While such large-size TVs will account for only 4% of TV unit shipments in 2004, they will command 20% of total market revenues. Due to the hefty prices and profit margins for such TVs, plasma and microdisplay RPTVs are competing intensely for consumer attention and mind share.
