Broadband modem, router and gateway revenues up 5% in Q1 2005
The worldwide broadband modem, router, and gateway market grew 5% to $1.2 bln between Q4 2004 and Q1 2005, and unit shipments grew 9% to 24.9 mln, according to Infonetics Research. Overall revenue is forecast to grow to $5.5 bln by 2008, fueled by new applications and higher speeds. D-Link takes the lead for overall broadband CPE revenue, not far ahead of Cisco-Linksys and Thomson; all of these vendors have DSL, cable, and router products, giving them an edge over DSL and cable specialists. Worldwide DSL CPE revenue was down 8% but is projected to grow 29% by Q1 2006 as DSL momentum accelerates further, worldwide cable CPE revenue was up 2% and is projected to grow 19% by Q1 2006; volume sales of lower-priced consumer routers account for much of this growth. 41% of worldwide broadband CPE revenue comes from DSL CPE, 34% from broadband routers, 15% from cable CPE, and the rest from voice terminal adapters and IP set top boxes. 37% of overall broadband CPE revenue is from North America, 35% from EMEA, 25% from Asia Pacific, and 3% from CALA; this split will shift by 2008 to 40% Asia Pacific, 30% EMEA, 25% North America, and 5% CALA.
