In 2004, the overall value of film sales to pay TV in Europe was an estimated 1.3 bln euros, compared to 1.1 bln euros for free TV. Rights holders generated another 182 mln euros from pay-per-view (PPV) movie services. However, France and the UK (together with Ireland) accounted for 41% of the pay TV film rights market. In every other territory, free TV sales exceeded sales to pay TV. In most markets, this will still be the case in 2009. We expect pay TV sales to overtake free TV sales in the Nordic region in 2005, in Germany in 2007 and in Italy and Spain in 2008. Over the next 5 years, growth in pay TV rights will outstrip free TV, ScreenDigest says.
