$456 bln spent on stock buybacks in 2005
1,012 US public companies announced $456 bln in stock buybacks in 2005, breaking the previous record set in 2004 when 728 companies said they would repurchase $312 bln worth of their own stock. TrimTabs reported cash takeovers of public companies amounting to $277 bln were announced in 2005, another annual record.
