180solutions responds to CDT complaint - I think?

Just a few days ago, the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) filed a lengthy, detailed complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) about 180’s sordid 2 year history of documented installs without notice or consent via exploits, alleged deceptive and unfair business practices, and so on, in 91 pages. A second complaint was filed against 180solutions and their partner CJB.net. Details in previous blog posts. Now 180solutions has issued a press release that I can only assume is a response to the CDT’s complaint.

BELLEVUE, Wash.-January 27, 2006-180solutions, Inc. today announced its efforts to stop a suspect in a Middle Eastern country from further distribution of 180solutions’ search assistant software using an IM Worm targeting AIM users. The company became aware of the illegal inclusion of its S3-enabled search assistant software in the suspect’s payloads at 5:00 p.m. PST on Friday, January 6. As a result of its recently developed technology enhancements, and facilitated by crucial information provided by internal reporting systems, 180solutions was able to identify and shut down the suspect’s activity involving 180solutions’ software by 6:20 p.m. PST.

I’m scratching my head because 180 is referring to old news, originally released by FaceTime on January 6 and blogged by yours truly the same day. Sean Sundwall of 180solutions responded in the talkbacks 3 days later with much of the same verbiage contained in today’s press release.

Even more curious is a post at security website CastleCops by a representative of 180solutions recruiting for an internet security job postion at 180. As Paperghost said at VitalSecurity, words fail me!

Looks like 180's propaganda department is running about 3 weeks behind. I'd guess that in another week or so they'll have some sort of circumlocutory response to the CDT complaint.... (Read the rest)
