Mono founder says Silverlight will come to Linux
Martin LaMonica over at Cnet talked to Miguel de Icaza, a vice president at Novell and head of the Mono project about Silverlight on Linux. De Icaza's response? Absolutely. I think it makes a lot of sense. As Martin noted, Mono developers could be big winners with the Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) that Microsoft announced as being part of Silverlight.
Mono is an open source project under the guidance of Novell that enables a subset of the .NET framework to run on Linux. When I asked Microsoft about the possiblity of Silverlight, they said that they would continue to listen to their customers needs and act accordingly. With Mono looking to implement Silverlight on Linux, they may not have to worry about it.
A Linux version of Silverlight would be put it on par with Flash, which right now can claim a better cross-platform story than Microsoft. Implementing it as part of the Mono project might also give it an open source boost. Martin didn't have a timeframe, but nonetheless, this is good news for RIA developers.
