Curl releases Mac version of their runtimeCurl, a Rich Internet Application platform that I covered a couple of months back, has released a public beta of the Macintosh version of their runtime this morning. Curl had a huge presence at the Web 2.0 expo this year and the company seems to be moving along rapidly.

According to the press release, this new version of the Mac RTE (Runtime Environment) includes all the features that are included in the runtimes for both Windows and Linux. With the Mac build almost fully along, Curl has a true cross platform story for their platform. That should help with developer adoption and expansion of the platofmr in general. The new Mac version comes in two flavors, an Intel Mac download and a Power PC Mac download. They’re both about 7 megs, so fit into what tends to be a sweet spot of less than 10 megs for a download.

I haven’t heard any penetration numbers or anything like that from Curl, but I get the sense that they’re making a big push in Asia, which is where their strong point is. On the 22nd they held a seminar in Korea about using Curl with Web 2.0. That seems like an interesting market. If they can ride some of the RIA/Web 2.0 Buzz in Asia, it could prove to be a profitable niche.
