Silverlight Release Candidate coming soon
On Friday Tim Sneath, an evangelist for Microsoft blogged about preparing for the release of Silverlight 1.0. It looks like we’ll have a release candidate in the next couple of weeks and then probably final version a couple of weeks after that. It will be very interesting to see how adoption by both users and developers evolves for Silverlight 1.0. Most of the features that developers are most excited about, like the Common Language Runtime, multiple language support and controls are all going to be in Silverlight 1.1 which was announced at MIX.
Silverlight 1.0 is very video focused, and it will be the first real competitor for Flash in the world of web video. Silverlight 1.0 uses the VC-1 codec which is an industry standard and has a a lot of vendor support because it has provided the backbone of Windows Media. Once Silverlight 1.0 is out of beta and actually released, one would think that internal Microsoft sites would start to use it and as a result, could help bump up adoption for when 1.1 is released making the decision to build applications an easier one for developers. It’s probably not out of the question to think that sites like Soapbox and Spaces could start to make heavy use of Silverlight and that microsoft.com might start using it exclusively.
