Have you seen the ZDNet blog network?

There has been a lot of talk recently about bloggers like Mike Arrington and Om Malik going it alone and building up a network of blog sites. The best example is Mike’s "Crunch network" which seems to be doing quite well, covering a wide range of topics. But when I look around, I think that the ZDNet blog network gives those guys a big run for their money. I think part of the perception problem is that Mike and Om have become rock star bloggers, while the ZDNet blogs are still associated with "old media" and Ziff Davis (Update: I should note that Ziff Davis Media is no longer associated with ZDNet). But word for word, we cover almost every topic under the sun - and we do it well. In fact, I think there are so many blogs that it may be tough to track them all, so I’ll break them down into some general categories.

Technology News

  • First off, for the pulse of whatever is going on with the world of technology, you have Between the Lines which covers all of the news, and has a podcast that lets you take ZDNet on the road.
  • There is also IT Facts, where Alex Moskalyuk provides technology insight.
  • George Ou has a popular technology blog covering all things IT.
  • We have spyware covered over at Spyware Confidential and Jeffrey Young’s Technicon covers the people behind the technology.
  • There is a new kid on the block. Lawgarithms is going to cover what is going on with the live web.

Technology Business

Open Source Technologies

  • ZDNet has open source well covered, starting with Ed Burnette’s Dev Connection, which provides info on open source through the eyes of a developer.
  • For all things open source, Dana Blankenhorn’s Open Source gives a great snapshot of the most important topics in open source.
  • If you’re just looking for Unix news, Paul Murphy has you covered.

The Digital World

  • We have Digital ID World for keeping you up to date on how the world, and your digital identity, are changing the face of technology.
  • We also have nearly all aspects of the digital age covered with Digital Micro-Markets tracking the trends and technologies an increasingly connected world.

Big Tech Companies

  • What other network gives you top notch coverage of the biggest companies in the tech world? We have Google covered in Googling Google.
  • Ed Bott is tracking all things Microsoft with Ed Bott’s Microsoft Report.
  • Apple freaks will be pleased with the news and insight coming from The Apple Core.

Cutting Edge Technology

  • Emerging Technology Trends gives ZDNet readers an overview of the new technology landscape.
  • Justin Rattner, Intel’s CEO gives his thoughts on what the tech landscape will look like on Over the Horizon.
  • Esther Dyson’s Release 0.9 provides a look at what new technology is making waves here in the USA and all over the world.
  • Importantly, we have communication covered. IP Telephony, VoIP, Broadband tracks the technologies that form the basis of the internet and are helping make the world smaller.

Gadgets and Mobile

Software

  • Where everything comes together, if you’re looking for enterprise software, we have Enterprise Anti-matter
  • John Carroll provides a creator’s view of the software landscape.
  • If you need news and info on Service-Oriented Architecture, Joe McKendrick has the big picture covered as well as insights for developers.
  • Software as services keeps readers up to date on cutting edge ways for businesses to deliver software.

Web 2.0

  • I think ZDNet has some of the best Web 2.0 coverage around, and it all starts with Richard MacManus’ Web 2.0 Explorer which gives you everything you need to track what is happening on the web.
  • For a more specific view, Dion Hincliffe provides enterprises with ways to take advantage of Web 2.0 on his Enterprise Web 2.0 blog.

There are a ton of great ZDNet blogs, and there is something for absolutely everyone. The breadth of analysis is sometimes overwhelming, but hopefully using the list and categories above, you can find exactly what you’re looking for. I don’t think there is as complete a blog network anywhere when it comes to technology. I’m happy to be a part of it.

RE: Agreed
Heh, hopefully not. I get a lot of my readers from Adobe's blog aggregator, MXNA, so this is more for that audience than people who have been reading ZDNet for a while. And I'd never seen it broken out into categories before.... (Read the rest)
