I spent a couple of days at the Microsoft Mobius event here in Seattle, but couldn’t share much of what was discussed on MobileTechRoundup show #190 due to NDA agreements. However, each attendee did receive an HTC HD2 from HTC so I shared a few thoughts about that device. As people try to figure out a good label for these latest generation smartphones Kevin brought up that we should go back to calling them Pocket PCs. James and I chatted about our pleasure with the Verizon Wireless MiFi and how useful of a tool that has become. Kevin also shared a new technology that he will be teting out soon in his local area. The Google Chrome OS was showed off this week and Kevin helped educate me about this latest “cloud” system.

Today we see the launch of the heavily advertised Motorola DROID on Verizon along with the HTC DROID ERIS. As James mentions at the start of MobileTechRoundup show #189 he is the only one of the three of us with the Motorola DROID in hand. If you are a Verizon Wireless customer it seems like almost a no-brainer to pick up a DROID or DROID ERIS today at $200 or $100, but Verizon’s very expensive plans are keeping me at home today. The HTC HD2 has a couple of us quite excited with that 1GHz Snapdragon processor and we will see it on some unnamed carrier in early 2010. Kevin is triple booting his netbook and after chatting I am also going to go install the new Moblin 2.1 OS that is optimized for netbooks. We ended by chatting about smartphone market share and the fact that integrated platforms seem to be doing better than licensed ones.

James, Kevin, and I kicked off MobileTechRoundup show #186 with my thoughts on the Nokia N900 Internet Tablet and my pleasure about finally receiving my blue Zune Originals media player. Kevin brought up the dual boot Acer Aspire D250 and we learned that it actually boots into Android first where you can then switch to Windows. James has been playing with the Dell Latitude ON device and we chatted a bit about that new laptop. The Motorola CLIQ reviews went live this week too.

The biggest news in the mobile world this week was obviously the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 and several devices so we had to spend some time during MobileTechRoundup show #185 talking about Windows Mobile again. We did go on to talk about the other hot news story of the further adoption of the Google Android operating system, including by Verizon Wireless. Kevin has been having some Google Sync for iPhone issues and also told us we should try out data roaming on the Palm Pre and HTC Hero.

Last week we spent the entire show talking about Windows Mobile and we did not start recording MobileTechRoundup show #184 with the intent to again focus on just one topic, but the Sprint HTC Hero that James and I are playing with is an amazing device and Kevin, James, and I just couldn’t get off the topic. One thing I mentioned was the Exchange experience and I posted an article on this functionality just a short while ago. The Hero is a compelling device and if there was one on T-Mobile USA I would be all over it right now.

James, Kevin, and I spent the entire time on this week’s MobileTechRoundup show #183 talking about Windows Mobile and what we think about the future of this platform. All of us have used Windows Mobile for quite a while and I am still an active user with my T-Mobile Touch Pro2, but I am also frustrated by their slowness to respond in the mobile world.

As I mentioned in my recent iPhone MMS post I appeared with Joel Evans on the latest Geek.com podcast a couple of days ago and now Geek.com podcast #27 is now live for your listening pleasure. As you can see in the show notes list, we spent time talking about Windows Mobile, Android, iPhone, Nokia, and Palm phones as well as ebook readers and other tech.

You can subscribe to the Geek.com podcast in iTunes or download the MP3 directly. I listen to Sal and Joel every week and enjoy listening to the show. I am sure Sal won’t appreciate all the Windows Mobile love that Joel and I gave this week, but he will be back to slamming Joel for it soon.

Kevin and I teased everyone a bit last week and in our focused MobileTechRoundup show #180 we spent quite a bit of time talking about the new T-Mobile HTC Touch Pro2. James then chimed in with Kevin to talk about the rise in homebrew apps for the Palm Pre and I am a bit jealous that Sprint coverage is not good enough for me to have a Pre. We talked about depositing check with my iPhone and then James had a possible Touchstone failure to report.

I tried to move my entire five line family plan to AT&T just about a month ago as I discussed a bit in MobileTechRoundup show #177, but this ended up being a failed experiment as I detail my move back to my old friend T-Mobile in MobileTechRoundup show #179. James, Kevin, and I also talked about the HP Mini 5150 and Toshiba NB205 netbooks. Two phones I checked out recently include the myTouch 3G and BlackBerry Curve 8520, one of which I have now purchased.

Geek.com podcast 19, back to chat with Joel about mobile gadgets

Posted by Matthew Miller @ 7:01 pm

My mobile writing career really began with Geek.com back in 2001 when Chief Geek, Joel Evans, gave me the chance to write about the latest PDA. My first short post was actually about the HP 565 Pocket PC in August 2001. Joel and Sal asked me to participate in this week’s Geek.com podcast and I had a great time sharing my thoughts on the latest gear and mobile news on Geek.com podcast 19. We covered several topics and I think the show sounds great.

Listen to the show to hear us chat about the BlackBerry Tour, AT&T Navigator software, Kindle 2 cracks, iTunes breaking Pre syncing, Google Reader, Zoho, and much more.
