The Gartner Q2 2009 data was posted last week and now we have the Canalys data to compare and confirm that everything reported last week is pretty consistent between the two. The North American data shows that Apple made significant increases, 365%, over the 2nd quarter of 2008 and continues to rise. RIM leads in North America with 52% of the market share, followed by Apple now at 23.3%, HTC at 4.6% (I believe this only counts HTC branded devices), and Others at 19.2%.

Canalys also took a look at primary input methods on the devices and we see that touchscreen devices are taking off in a big way with growth of 283% (from 11.7% to 39.6%). Keypad devices are down 42% and keyboard devices are up 29%.

As a fan of Windows Mobile devices it is disappointing to continue to see their numbers fall, but I have a feeling this may change in the next quarter with the Touch Pro2 and HTC Snap devices generating quite a bit of excitement across all major US wireless carriers. IMHO, the Touch Pro2 is the best Windows Mobile device I have ever used and should appeal to a number of people who have no desire to switch carriers.
