Tired of your traditional wireless carrier here in the US and looking for a change? Sascha Segan reports that a new wireless carrier will be launching soon with no phone calls going over the GSM voice network. Calls from the ZERO1 Mobile network will all be VoIP calls made with their proprietary VoIP application that will first be available on Windows Mobile 6 handsets. You will be able to get unlimited data and VoIP calls for US$69.95 per month on a month-to-month basis with no contract or credit check required.

The network is designed for users to bring their own SIM-unlocked phones to the network, but they will also offer the HTC TyTN II, Touch Diamond, and HTC Touch 3G for customers who do not have a Windows Mobile 6 device. Soon after launch, they plan to provide their VoIP application and support for Android, BlackBerry, Symbian, Java, and jailbroken iPhones.

I have always associated VoIP with my S60 devices because that is where the best integrated support currently is in the mobile space. However, third parties like Truphone are expanding into many other mobile operating systems. I also thought Windows Mobile was supposed to support VoIP better in WM 6.1, but haven’t seen developers take advantage of this functionality.
