Five stylish alternatives to the typical camera bag

If you carry around a typical-looking camera bag, especially when traveling abroad, you’re almost asking to be robbed. While they are often built with decent interior padding for your equipment, they’re often clunky and ugly. There are plenty of camera totes out there that will take care of your camera, reflect your personal style, and won’t cost you $1,000.

1. Banana Republic Leather Camera Bag: Just released last week, this brown leather bag would look great for both men and women. Built with cotton twill interior lining and measuring at 11.4 inches x 4.33 inches x 13.4 inches, it can fit any basic digital SLR camera along with your other daily necessities. (Price: $148)

2. Timbuk2 Camera Bag Hack Kit: One of the best aspects of the Timbuk2 messenger bag brand is that each bag is customizable. They also find that its better to avoid the “There are thousands of dollars of equipment in this bag!” look. Thus, their designers have partnered with Domke to fit padded camera compartments for the standard Medium-sized Timbuk2 messenger bag. (Prices depend on the size and colors you choose for your messenger bag.)

Three more after the jump…

3. Kenneth Cole Motorway Camera Bag: More on the feminine side, this leather bag with a removable shoulder strap doesn’t have measurements published online, but it promises to hold your camera, plus your cell phone, keys and probably a few other small items. (Price: $169.98)

4. National Geographic Earth Explorer Shoulder Bag: There is something about this bag that screams adventure and exploration. It’s also built for the techie-on-the-go, as it comes with interior padding for a medium-sized digital SLR camera, camcorder and laptop. There are also plenty of zip pockets for all of your extra accessories and necessities. (Price: $99.90)

5. Crumpler Bundle Bag (Large): Much like the Timbuk2 bags, Crumpler bags are customizable, but this store has many more options when it comes to design, size and color. The large Bundle bag is a great option if you’re on a budget and only looking to hold a DSLR or a camcorder. The water-resistant knapsack available in four colors, comes with an adjustable/removable shoulder strap and fully-padded main compartment. (Price: $26)

Do any of these bags interest you? What do you look for in a camera bag? What kind of bag do you use to protect and carry your camera equipment?
