iPhone 3G S with new camera features debuts today

The new iPhone 3G S debuts today, with a number of brand new digital camera features, including an 3 megapixel auto-focus camera, compared with 2 megapixels on the 3G model. Even though there still isn’t flash (but I’m not a big fan of flash photography anyway), users can adjust white balance and tap an object in the frame to focus on that subject.

That’s not all…

But most importantly: there’s video shooting capability. Filming in either portrait or landscape mode, you can record 30-fps VGA video. That’s perfectly decent for posting on the web. You can even edit your videos directly on your phone, without any third-party applications either. In terms of sharing, you can e-mail your videos, or if you have a MobileMe account, you can upload and publish straight away.

Apple has set the bar fairly high when it comes to aesthetic and technological design. However, it’s still only 20% of the U.S. smartphone market, coming in second to RIM’s 55%. Could this all change with the iPhone 3GS? This isn’t to say the iPhone 3G S is the greatest device ever. Aside from the camera functions, It’s not much of an upgrade from previous models. But to ignore its influence on the smartphone market would be foolhardy.

Are the new camera features enough to influence your decision on buying a new iPhone? Does the camera function on an iPhone even matter at all?
