Facebook confirmed today that Marc Andreessen, co-founder of Ning and perhaps best known for his co-founding Netscape, has joined the social network’s board of directors. In an official statement, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg claims that Andreessen’s joining the Facebook team is a natural step and complementary to the site:

“Marc is an industry leader, and we’re fortunate to have him join our board,” said Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “He has experience that is relevant to Facebook in so many ways: scaling companies that are experiencing extraordinary growth, creating successful technology platforms, and building strong engineering organizations. I know Marc will be a great mentor to me and our leadership team.”

Interesting to note in the same announcement it is written that Ning, which allows users to develop their own social networks, and long considered to be a competitor to Facebook, is now considered to be a complementary service. Andreessen currently still holds his position as chairman of Ning’s board.

It will be interesting to see how Andreessen’s joining Facebook potentially reshapes the future of Facebook — and perhaps we’ll see an upcoming partnership with Ning?
