On Monday, Peter Kim released 2009 social media predictions after researching via the only way social media predictions should be done — crowdsourcing. It was a brilliant move on his part considering that user-generated content is a key foundation of the industry itself. The report he published is, as would be expected of Kim, thought-provoking and comprehensive.

Kim tapped a bevy of thought leaders including Charlene Li, Scott Monty, Jason Falls, Joseph Jaffe and others for their perspective on the year to come. However, I wanted to see what the “little people” (no offense, friends) see on the horizon. Especially with the speed at which social media moves, today’s little people could be 2009’s thought leaders. Plus I wanted more “in the trenches” perspective. I tapped my network of Twitter followers this morning (even provided a prize incentive) and challenged them to come up with some of their own predictions for 2009 social media. I received a ton of responses. Here are the handful that made the cut:

  • agent0×0 Twitter users get scammed by a big phishing scam. Many accounts will be compromised. Probably thru tinyurl (url redirection)
  • sonnygill 2009 Prediction - Smaller budgets, due to the economy and cutbacks, will make way for the low-cost SM into more business strategies
  • Marc_Meyer Collaboration & contraction accoss the board. Big companies will look 2 combine forces, utlities & rescources 2 address SM
  • starmike As part of its monetization plan, Twitter will license its server technology for private corporate use
  • tmonhollon Social media territory will become less siloed within orgs via collaboration and intra-org participation
  • nhldigest Google Friend Connect takes 20% of Facebook Marketshare by end 2009
  • McGrewSecurity More niche social networking sites. Look for more lifestyle/interest-groups choosing socnets over web forums for new sites
  • kholmgren authentication - OpenID, Facebook Connect, Google Friend Connect - all fighting for comment control. Most blogs will have one
  • jaybaer 2009 will be the year of video. Tons of consolidation in the industry, but MANY bloggers and commenters will begin video posts
  • mubix My prediction is that MySpace goes away and a new Facebook competitor comes around. Because MySpace isn’t expanding in any sort of innovative way. They have apps, but no where near the uptake that FB had
  • johnheaney Prediction:the majority of firms that begin SM strategy will abandon when they face uncontrollable negative comments/feedback
  • FletchTheMaven My social media prediction. Protocols that allow for portability of user ID’s (username/password) becoming more popular.

What is YOUR prediction?

I Second that Prediction
Whomever spawned the phrase Social Networking was an idiot. There is nothing social about sitting in a room and typing on a computer what you are doing or plan to be doing. I feel sorry for anybody that has to use sites like FB and the rest... (Read the rest)
