Queen offers new greatest hits album exclusively for Logitech Squeezebox Radio

I’m not usually one to put puns into my blog posts, but with the announcement of Queen’s “Absolute Greatest” being released exclusively on the Logitech Squeezebox Radio, one has to wonder if this is the real life, or if it’s just fantasy?

The new greatest hits album will be available on November 16, but those with a Logitech Squeezebox Radio can get the album seven weeks in advance. These people will have exclusive access to the complete “Absolute Greatest” album, along with track lyrics, and a number of photos that are available now for the first time. The Queen App also features track-by-track audio commentaries from band members Brian May and Roger Taylor explaining the composition and history of each hit.

Logitech says this is the first time in record label history that an album has been available exclusively in this format. Queen has a history of firsts in the industry, which includes being the first band to make a stadium tour of South America (in 1981), and the first band to commercially release a collection of videos. So, why not be the first to release a “new” album on a new medium?

Queen’s first “Greatest Hits” album is officially the United Kingdom’s biggest-selling album ever. Yes, it even outsells the Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” by almost a million copies. So, chances are, some die-hard Queen fans will splurge for the Squeezebox Radio, just to have the album and the extra features early.

Logitech on Tuesday introduced its Portable Lapdesk N315, an inexpensive accessory to aid in using a laptop computer without a desk.

The Lapdesk keeps overheating and what I refer to as “Tyrannosaurus” syndrome — cramped wrists — at bay by protecting your legs and knees from the heat. It also has a retractable mouse pad for full-on couch computing.

The accessory handles a laptop of up to 15.4 inches in size, and sports an anti-slip top.

It’s available now for $29.99.

In addition to a $150 Harmony 700 remote, Logitech announced on Thursday its Squeezebox Radio, a clock radio-sized speaker system that streams Internet radio, online music services and songs stored on your computer.

Called a “network music player” — it uses 802.11g — the radio has integrated speakers and a 2.4-inch LCD with which you can view playlists and other information. The ‘box has neat social network integration, pairing with Facebook, Rhapsody, Pandora, Slacker, iTunes, Sirius, and Last.fm and more for music recommendations and tunes, respectively.

Compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux, it can handle MP3, FLAC, WMA, WMA Lossless, AAC, Apple Lossless, WAV, and AIFF.

It’s available at the end of September for $199 in black or red.

Logitech also announced the step-up Squeezebox Touch model, distinguished by a 4.3-inch touchscreen and outputs for connecting directly to a home entertainment system.

The Touch can also play tracks directly from USB drives and SD cards.

It’s set for December release and will sell for $299.

Logitech on Thursday announced its Harmony 700 universal remote, offering a rechargeable device that replaces six devices and sports a color LCD screen.

Like its much more expensive big brother the Harmony 900 — which offers RF tech and a $400 price tag — the $150 Harmony 700 keeps the remote’s cherished curvature and does away with the technological excess.
